The Up There is the solo music project from Karl Carson (he/him) a singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist from Louisville Kentucky. He makes the kind of rich, ethereal indie-pop that emerges, dark and glittering, from the collective gay subconscious. Karl, an airline pilot, creates music that is infused with the longing and wistfulness of receiving otherworldly melodic downloads while watching cities twinkle by as he crosses the peaceful skies in the middle of the night.

From his home studio in Louisville, he is in the process of recording his first ever full-length LP which he is expecting to complete in late 2026. This studio is a cozy attic space where he tinkers and tracks other local artists, and is affectionately referred to as Flop Pop Studio. Drawing on his own sense of existential dread, these songs are Carson’s way of coping with the apocalyptic-feeling era through which we are all living.
